These key characters from the ancient Athellane stories were the ancestors of masks from popular theatre such as Pulcinella and inspired many tales from the seventeenth century. Mythical figures from peasant culture, interconnected with the daily life of those lands where people such as the Oshi established the first colonies, pushing as far as the Volturno area, still survive today in the collective imagination.
